HOW CAN AN ADVOCATE HELP?

A Child's Rights' Advocate can help you in one of two general ways. An Advocate can provide advice and assistance as needed throughout the IEP process, while you do most of the work. Or, an Advocate can be directly involved as your formal representative. Here are some of the specific tasks an Advocate can help you with:

  • Accessing the strength of your case, if you are considering filing a complaint or pursuing due process

  • Helping you formally resolve a dispute with the school district

  • Requesting an assessment or an IEP meeting

  • Preparing for the IEP eligibility meeting

  • Preparing for the IEP program meeting – including drafting goals and objectives, reviewing supportive evidence and materials, providing pointers about the IEP meeting, etc.

  • Attending an IEP meeting

  • Preparing for and attending mediation

  • Researching a specific legal issue that is central to your case or the IEP itself

  • Reviewing assessments and IEP's before you sign the IEP

  • Securing your child's school files ...more...
